In order to prevent weight gain there needs to be a balance between energy intake and energy expenditure. If energy intake exceeds expenditure, weight gain will result.
Energy intake: Energy comes from the foods we eat, e.g., carbohydrates, fats and proteins and alcohol.
Energy expenditure: There are two main components to energy expenditure.
Resting metabolic rate: The calories consumed to maintain life sustaining functions e.g., breathing accounts for approximately 70% of daily energy expenditure.
Physical activity accounts for approximately 5 to 30% of the calories consumed and includes occupational activities, incidental activities eg hanging out the washing, housework, gardening etc and planned exercise.
Your weight gain may have occurred over a number of years therefore weight loss and more importantly maintaining that weight loss is also going to be a long-term process. For weight loss to be successful in the long-term, your exercise plan must be something that you can sustain for a life time.
